Our History

In 1864, during America’s Civil War, a handful of visionary business leaders decided to open a bank in Newtown, Pennsylvania. Since then, we’ve guided our customers through many difficult times, from the Great Depression and two World Wars, to a worldwide recession and a global pandemic. We’ve seen a lot of banks come and go over the years, but The First has remained. No name changes. 

No mergers. Rock-solid in the face of adversity and dedicated to providing top-notch personal service to our customers. We remain committed to Bucks County and to the practices that have allowed us to remain an independent, community bank all these years. It has been – and will continue to be – our privilege to serve you.

Chartered in 1863, laying the foundation for over a century of trusted banking.

The First was Chartered on February 23, 1863, Charter No.324, by the Comptroller of the Currency, Washington D.C.
1864

New Headquarters

The First moves its headquarters to 40 South State Street in Newtown, where it remains to this day.

1928: Our iconic clock began ticking at State Street and Centre Avenue, marking time and history.

The First is founded as an independent and locally-focused bank amidst the Civil War.

In 1965, we opened our first branch outside of Newtown, The Wrightstown Office.

Daniel J. Schaffer

President/CEO

Dan Schaffer serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer of The First National Bank & Trust Company of Newtown. A lifelong Bucks County resident, Dan has dedicated the past 30 years to supporting local residents and businesses with their banking and lending needs. A graduate of Penn State University and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking, he has led the bank as President and CEO for the past 13 years. During his tenure, the bank has achieved steady growth in assets, deposits, loans, income, and client relationships. Thanks to his leadership, the bank is well-equipped with the infrastructure, talent, and technology needed to grow and continue as a thriving independent community bank.
